All three principal ritual masters of House of White Elephant hold the rank of Shingon Āchārya. The term Āchārya — from Sanskrit, meaning "teaching master" — is an honorific in Buddhism reserved for senior masters who are fully qualified to transmit precepts, esoteric teachings, perform initiations, and preside over rituals.

In the Shingon (Tōmitsu) tradition, attaining Āchārya rank demands years of rigorous training — typically including extended retreat practice at sacred sites such as Kōyasan or Hieizan, mastery of complex ritual protocols, mudrās and mantras, formal transmission and initiation, and the recognition and seal of approval from a preceding Āchārya. The process takes years at minimum, and often decades.

This lineage traces back to Tang Dynasty Esoteric Buddhism over 1,300 years ago, a tradition that left behind documented accounts of nation-protecting manifestations in historical records. Brought to Japan by Master Kūkai, it took root as the Tōmitsu lineage — and as Esoteric Buddhism gradually faded in China, Japan became its living custodian.

Through over a millennium of unbroken transmission, generation after generation of Āchāryas have served emperors and nobility, and sheltered ordinary people alike — continuously refined and verified through the passage of time.

This is not to diminish the value of modern spiritual practitioners, among whom there are genuinely gifted individuals. But esoteric lineages operate with rigorous standards and structured training systems, producing far greater consistency in quality. Standing upon thousands of years of accumulated experience, their discernment and handling of any situation carries a depth and precision that is simply difficult to replicate.
